Welcome to LocallyGrownNYC.com:
The archive of all Greenmarkets in Manhattan!

         "Locally Grown?"

"Locally Grown" implies a category of foods grown or raised in a nearby area. The Greenmarkets of Manhattan all contain foods grown at most 200 miles away from the markets themselves.

In a day and age in which we care more and more about what we consume, advertising and rumors confuse us and lead us to question what is actually healthy. Manhattan's farmer's markets provide food that is not only healthier and fresher than that of a conventional grocery store, but also key in lowering the carbon footprint we leave by minimizing the need for transportation and preservation. After all, "The food industry burns nearly a fifth of all the petroleum consumed in the United States." (Pollan, The Omnivore's Dilemma, 2006.)

              The Project

This project is a conglomeration of information gathered from the 25 different Greenmarkets of Manhattan. Over the summer, I took extensive notes at each market with the formation of a comprehensive, informative website in mind. There are no websites or guides to the Greenmarkets of Manhattan out there, so why not create one!

Each "Review" discusses topics such as variety, practicality of location, notable qualities and pricing.  The project couldn't have been a success without the help of the ever-friendly Greenmarket staff and vendors, www.cenyc.org, and Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma.
